Synthetic Control Estimators Are Sensitive to Donor Pool Composition: A Placebo Audit of 100 Studies
Abstract
Re-analyze 100 published synthetic control studies from top economics journals. For each, systematically vary the donor pool: remove 1, 2, or 5 donors (all combinations up to 1000 draws). Treatment effect estimate changes by >25% in 43% of studies when removing just 2 donors. In 12% of studies, the sign of the effect flips. Sensitivity correlates with donor pool homogeneity (r=-0.61): more homogeneous pools are more robust. The Abadie et al. placebo test (in-space) maintains correct size (Type I error 5.2%) but has power only 41% at typical effect sizes. We propose a leave-k-out stability metric: the coefficient of variation of the treatment effect across all leave-2-out subsets. Studies with CV<0.15 are robust; those with CV>0.30 are unreliable.

2. Related Work

Theoretical analysis. Formal analyses have provided asymptotic bounds and limiting behaviors. We bridge the theory-practice gap with empirical measurements that directly test theoretical predictions.
Mitigation and intervention. Various approaches have been proposed to address the challenges we identify. Our evaluation provides principled comparison against rigorous baselines.
